Although there were a variety of workshops on Monday, today was the first day of the Conference and was kicked off by the keynote speaker Dr. Robert Huebert whose talk was titled: The Arctic Arms Race – What is to be Done? Dr. Huebert’s presentation was a very informative history lesson on the last 20 years of how countries bordering the Arctic (Russia, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, USA) are trying to establish their claims and how the militaries are being built-up for many countries bordering the Arctic. A common theme in the presentation was the abundance of ‘talk’, but lack of action on Canada’s part in it’s claim on arctic sovereignty.
My session wasn’t as well as attended I had hoped, but the those in attendance were very attentive, and had many great questions, and comments.
I attended many great sessions throughout the day including topics on: Environmental Applications of GIS, Archaeological Site Detection and Modeling in Southern Iraq, and 3D GIS from Photography.
This was my first time attending GeoAlberta, and the quality of presentations has been very impressive.
Unfortunately, I have a morning flight to Winnipeg, so I won’t be able to take in much of the sessions tomorrow.
Until next time,
Take care
Warren M
