MapGuide Open Source 2.2 Beta is released

For those following the MGOS developments you might be interested in the latest 2.2 beta that has been posted to the OSGeo MapGuide site.  I did see a couple API items that have changed and could affect existing code, so be sure to check the release notes for major changes.

Open Source is growing…

Just came across a great article on the growth of Open Source over the last few years, and specifically, the OSGeo.  In this article Geoff Zeiss, Peter Riecks, and Mark Christian from Autodesk discuss how MapGuide & FDO have been growing in the Open Source community.

MapGuide Maestro 2.0

This past Wednesday, Kenneth Skovhede announced the latest release of his MapGuide Maestro 2.0 application.  Maestro is an Open Source authoring application which can be used on a MapGuide Enterprise, or Open Source installation.

Don’t be fooled by the ‘free open source’ moniker of this application…  This is an extremely powerful tool, and offers many advantages over MapGuide Studio.  There are many things that Maestro does better than MapGuide Studio, and vice versa.  I personally use both applications just for that reason.

Some of the main features that appeal to me are:

• The ability to create Packages without using the web-based MapGuide Administrator tool.
• The ability to rename a resource and all of the related resources can be updated.
• The ability to quickly edit the raw XML resource.

MapGuide Open Source: Install Execution Error

I just ran into a situation that I had not come across before.  I downloaded the latest MGOS onto a box with Windows Server 2003 installed.  After the download was complete, I went to run the EXE and received the following error:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file

After some research, it appears that the OS has ‘blocked’ the file because it was an exe.  To get this to run, just simply goto the Properties dialog for the file and click the ‘Unblock’ button.  The installation will then work as expected.

MapGuide Open Source 2.1

The latest release of MapGuide Open Source was officially released the other day.

In addition to many bug fixes, some of the highlights include:

• Raster Re-projections
• Implementation of the CS-Map coordinate system library
• Improved error reporting
• Improvements in stability and performance

AU 2009 – December 1-3, Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas

AU 2009 is quickly approaching and I will once again be instructing a class this year: From AutoCAD Map 3D to MapGuide in 2 Simple Steps: Connect, Stylize, and Publish.  I will also be co-presenting with Mike Schlosser again in his session: Analyze This! How to Use AutoCAD® Map 3D for Geospatial Analysis.

The conference changes venue this year to Mandalay Bay Resort after a good run at The Venetian.  As always, there is no shortage of great classes and labs at AU this year including 47 classes in the Geospatial Track alone.  In addition to the classes, there are many reasons to attend AU including great networking opportunities and social events throughout the week.  If you need some help justifying your attendance to your management, check this out.
