The default density is 1000kg/m3. This is the density used if a material has not been applied to the model. The mass is calculated using this density value and the volume of the model.
If volume of the material that the part will be made of is known, then it can be typed in this Density value field. After the density is typed in, then the mass is automatically updated to reflect the current value. For example by applying the density of aluminum, the mass property will be respectively recalculated as if the part were made of aluminum.
Applying a Material
If the density value of the material to be used is not known, then a material can be applied to the part. CATIA V5 comes installed with a default library, but this can be customized to suit the needs of the end user.
To apply a material, click and drag the material from the library onto the part. Another way to apply a material is to select the material from the library and select the part from the Specification Tree or 3D model, then click . After the material is applied, then a branch will be added to the Specification Tree showing the applied material.
Once the material is applied, then the respective density of the material applied will be used when Measure Inertia is calculated on the part. Click on the part or PartBody, and the respective mass value will be displayed.
