I have to admit – I’m dragging today. Last week’s time at AU, meeting clients and friends, making new contacts and linking other people together… getting back to work this week takes a bit of adjustment.
And I am severely lacking in focus.
So what do I do? Head out to the internet, of course! :) I’ve linked to videos from Ted.com before, and I’m going to do that again today. There are an incredible number of really interesting and inspiring presentations there and the two below caught my attention. The spider silk presentation might include some things that you already knew about spider silk, but it goes into a lot of additional detail about spiders and spider silk than I ever knew before – the way a single spider spins multiple types of silk to meet the specific need, the varying strengths of silk, and more. Does this have anything directly to do with building design? Maybe yes, maybe no. If you look at nature as an inspiration for design, then absolutely!
On the second one – the technology of storytelling, in addition to just being a great presentation, think about what he is saying as it applies to building design and construction… how many of the things we do today are virtually the same as what was done hundreds of years ago, and how many things out there have really significantly changed the game? Layered drawings? CAD? BIM? The best presentations should be entertaining, informative, and thought provoking. To me, this fits the bill.
And really, since I am able to bring it all into a blog post, it’s all been real work for me!
Enjoy.
