Last week, I was at an Albuquerque, NM CSI conference giving a presentation on multi-discipline / multi-company model sharing techniques with Revit. While there, our hosts from CSI (all great people!) provided some of us a handout that listed the top 10 things that specifiers wanted product reps and other consultants to know. While IMAGINiT doesn't represent building component manufacturers, there is still a fair amount of similarity that I can place between this top 10 list and one that would apply to the software and technology side.
So why am I mentioning it here in our blog? Good question!
My question to anyone who has the time and desire to give a quick reply is, "What would be on your list of things you wish your reseller or technology consultant knew?" Here is their top 10:
- Get to know me and my firm
- Know what information to provide and when
- Know what division 01 says about your substitution request (to me this translates into, know the competing software and technology that is out there)
- Know your product and product literature
- Write good guide specifications
- Be honest about your product's limitations
- Know the competition's products...
- ... but don't trash the competition
- Teach about your industry, don't sell your product
- Join CSI and get your CDT and CCPR
So that is the CSI top 10 for building product reps... what would YOU add to it for someone like me? Drop it in the comments below.
Have fun with it!
