Should you configure the P&ID settings for a Plant project template to be Spec Driven? We must first understand the differences and ramifications of how Plant 3D will apply them in a project.
Standard P&ID projects
Specifications and Sizes are assigned for P&ID and Plant 3D drawings via Project Setup in a list.
Spec Driven P&ID projects
Specifications are listed from the project spec file directory and size found in them when a project spec file is selected.
Specification and Size Properties
The Property type settings for P&ID or P3D class definitions are the same for Standard or Spec Driven P&ID projects.
P&ID DWG Settings – P&ID Class Definitions – Engineering Items – Lines – Pipe-Line Segments
Plant 3D DWG Settings – Plant 3D Class Definitions – Piping and Equipment – Pipe Run Component
P&ID Pipe Routing Changes
Standard P&ID Project
Standard P&ID projects employ specification and size lists to define the information that can be used in documenting process flows. Since these lists are independent of the project specifications they can differ.
*The P3D Specification and Size selection lists will display the names of all specifications included in the project and only those sizes included in those specifications.
Spec Driven P&ID Project
The P&ID Specification and Size selection lists will display project Specifications and sizes at the top along with the Standard P&ID Project’s specification and size lists below.
*The P3D Specification and Size selection lists will display the names of all specifications included in the project and only those sizes included in those specifications.
Off Spec selections allow designers to start and/or complete project P&ID’s before the P3D specifications have been completed.
While this has the potential to allow incorrect data to be used in the P&D drawings the Validation tools in Plant 3D can be used to monitor for inconsistencies.
