Service Pack 1.0 fixes Synchronized Pipe and Structure Styles Issue

I have received a lot of emails from friends who were unsure why the newer version of Civil 3D reverted pipes and structures to its original styles after synchronizing. Users were used to changing pipe styles throughout the construction set to represent existing vs. proposed pipe in plan and profile view. Then after synchronizing the data shortcuts, the pipes maintained the styles that were manually applied to them. 

 

 

With the initial release of Civil 3D 2015 this functionality was not the same. If pipes were synchronized, it would revert back to the original pipe styles that was used in the catalog. Several workarounds were used to address this issue, including using separate catalogs for existing pipes, and a few more menacing workflows. But now the Civil 3D 2015 service pack 1 has modified this behavior and allows users to follow older workflows that were used in earlier versions. (See service pack notes below)

The latest version of Civil 3D 2015 with the service pack 1.0 now allows for the prior workflow to be used. Where pipes and structures will retain its manually changed style throughout the construction set after it’s synchronized through the data shortcuts.

Double line entry on a single line Point label using Description Keys

One of my favorite sayings goes like this. “The best thing about AutoCAD is that are multiple ways to complete a task. Then sometimes, the frustrating thing about AutoCAD is there are multiple ways to complete the same task.” Hence, there are a lot of way to make this process work but I thought I would share this simple trick that will allow double line entry on a single line label style using Description Keys.

So the question is: Why would want to use something like this? Imagine you have created a point that had all the information on one line, but wanted to split the data up into multiple line entries. 

So an easy way to make this work is to add the old Unicode DOS text expressions to the Description Key’s formatting cell. Add the “\p” to the description key line, at the end of the first string and presto. Double line are now easy to do, users can get creative and make up more scenarios and formats to fit their needs.
