You could also accomplish this simplified surface by creating a Grid Volume surface with a base surface at elevation 0. The zero surface could be a simple rectangle polyline at elevation 0 added to the surface as a contour or breakline. The Grid Volume surface will then equal the elevations of the original surface but in a simplified grid formation, and dynamically linked.
