Design Views in an Inventor assembly have may uses. They can assist in component isolation during the design process, make it easy to switch between large assembly views during a group presentation and be transferred to an Inventor 2D drawing to do a quick detail of a section of a larger assembly to mention a few. The last use is the one I want to talk about in this article.
First let me show you an image of my complete assembly. It is a model steam engine from my collection.
I have created a Design View of just the base assembly.
I want to create an isometric drawing view of this design view in my drawing. Using the Base View command, I choose the design view "Base Assy Only" from the View drop down list. Select the arrangement and any other display options and place the view on the sheet.
Notice in the image above the red arrow. I notice I accidentally left out a socket head cap screw and washer. I jump back into my assembly and quickly make the missing components visible in my design view. Returning to my drawing I notice the added components have not appeared in my drawing. This takes us to the main topic of this article, Associative Design Views.
I edit my drawing view and notice I did not place a check beside the "Associative" option. This option will keep the assembly design view and the drawing view synchronized so both show the same components. After placing a check in the box and selecting OK, the drawing view is updated.
In this case I wanted the design view to update to reflect the assembly view but there will be times when this may not be the case. The "Associative" option is not checked by default so you can make the decision.
