Inventor Task Scheduler Tips

The Inventor Task Scheduler is intended to perform automated tasks and acts as a batch processor in Inventor and other applications. The tips provided here are intended to help you use it more efficiently.

Inventor Project Files

Not all of the tasks available to you have the ability to support Inventor Project files that are configured for Vault.  To keep your processes flexible, set up two Inventor Project files. These Project files should have identical settings with the exception of “Type”. Set one project file to Single User and the other to Vault.

Multiple Processes

By default, the Inventor Task Scheduler is configured to run one process at a time for each task. To speed things up, particularly for large jobs such as Migrations or Updates, you can increase the number of Inventor processes to run at the same time.

In the Task Scheduler main menu, click Settings Multiple Processes. 

       

In the Multi-Process dialog, do the following and then click OK: 

• • Select Activate Multiple Processes.
  • Specify the number of processes you want to run. The number can be from 1 to 16, regardless of the number of processors (CPUs) available.
  • Select Abort When Physical Memory Is Reached.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Note: Maximum Combined Memory Usage designates the maximum memory that all the Inventor processes, at any given time, are allowed to consume. Set this value smaller than the physical memory value to avoid swapping. If the combined virtual memory exceeds the value entered, no additional processes start.

Diagnosing Errors

When configuring a task, there is an option to specify the location and file name of the log file.  The default location is: “C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor YYYY\Task Scheduler Logs & Reports\”.

When running a task, there are occasions where errors may occur, and that information is stored in the log file.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The log file contains entries for all of the files processed. To simplify the process of identifying only the files with errors use “Export to Excel”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When using “Export to Excel” only the errors in the log file will be exported. Each error type will be organized on individual Sheets.

 

Saving Inventor CAM Stock for Secondary Operations

Creating a stock setup with Inventor CAM is simple if you’re starting from stock that’s cylindrical, box, or tube shaped. But what if your part has been pre-machined for tooling, cast, or has a complex shape? Inventor CAM equips users with the ability to save the stock body at any stage in the machining process and then use it in secondary setups!

Take a look at the part below. The initial roughing and internal boring is done by turning down the part on a 2-Axis lathe. This will leave the subsequent milling, chamfer, and drilling operations to be done with a vertical mill.

To export the remaining stock for the milling setup, follow these steps:

1. Run the toolpath simulation until it’s finished.

2. Right-click anywhere in the graphics window and select Stock > Save Stock.

3. Choose a folder location to save the stock body. Give the file a unique name that represents the first set of operations. The file type will default to Stereolithography (.stl) format.

4. Select "Save."

5. From the “Manage” tab – click on “Import.”

6. Navigate to the folder where the stock file was saved and select it.

7. IMPORTANT! Before selecting “Open” – click on “Options.” Set the Import Units value to “millimeter.” This assures that the .stl file is converted correctly. If this step isn’t taken – the body will be about 25 times too big.

8. Select “Open” to import the stock solid to the part file.

9. The STL body should automatically be imported and located in the same orientation as the model body. It will appear as a black triangulated geometry. In the model browser you’ll see it labeled as a “MeshFeature.”

 

10. From the CAM tab on the Job panel select “Setup.” to create a new stock setup for the remaining vertical milling operations.

11. On the “Stock” tab, change the Mode to “Stock Solid” using the drop-down menu.

12. Click on the black STL body as the Stock solid. It should highlight the surface in yellow.

13. On the “Setup” tab – select a new Stock WCS point and orientation for the milling setup. Typically this will mean the Z-axis will be specified as the vertical milling direction.

14. Return to the model browser and right-click on the mesh body. Select “Visibility” to hide the body.

15. Add the required 2D and 3D milling toolpaths to finish the machining program. Simulate the second setup to visualize the final stock removal.

NOTE: The same process can be used to import modeled stock solids (e.g. cast or pre-machined parts). A variety of formats besides STL are accepted including STEP, IGES, and Parasolid files.

Optimize Designs with Inventor Parametric Studies

When developing products, it’s important that engineers make informed design decisions. Factors like material, weight, and safety factor are typically key inputs that drive the design process. It’s an iterative process that can require hundreds of different configurations to be tested to see which performs the best and still satisfies the required criteria. Fortunately, the Inventor Stress Analysis environment has a tool called Parametric Study that quickly generates, analyzes, and sorts variations of models to help guide the designer.

Let’s use a bicycle crank arm as an example of parametric study. There are elements of the arm that might not change significantly (e.g. thread sizing, material, length). However, there are thousands of different thicknesses that could potentially work. Additionally, there are thousands of cutout shape and sizes that could be used to reduce the weight of the arm. Here are some potential arm designs with varying thickness and cutout dimensions:

Before jumping into a Parametric Study it’s best to name your key parameters in your model. For the crank arm, let’s focus on the thickness, slot depth, and slot length. Those elements will have a significant impact on the weight of the design and are easy to change.

To start a new study, click on the Environments tab in Inventor and choose “Stress Analysis.” Then click on "Create Study." In the dialogue box – use the drop-down menu to change the Design Objective to “Parametric Dimension.” Then select “OK” to begin the new stress analysis study.

Next, build a Linear Static load study in the typical fashion. This will involve assigning materials, defining loads, constraining faces, and generating assembly contacts. For the crank arm and pedal assembly, the threaded sections are assigned a bonded contact. The side faces of the pedal and crank arm are assigned a separation contact.

Both parts are assigned the material Aluminum 6061. The mesh is reduced to a global size of 3% the bounding box length. This will produce a converged and reliable result.

The square faces where the arm will attach to the crank assembly are constrained as Fixed. This means that the nodes on those faces cannot translate or rotate along any axis. A 100 lbf load is applied to the two horizontal faces of the pedal in the orientation shown below. This position of the crank arm and force value represents the maximum load scenario.

To setup the input parameters, begin by right-clicking on the model name below the analysis name in the Study browser. Then, choose “Show Parameters.”

From the dialogue box, choose the parameters that will be changing during the study. Click the check box in the “Model Parameters” column to add to the study. This will create the varying configurations for the solver. It’s best to start simple and only choose 2-4 parameters. Click “OK” to finish.

Next, click on Parametric Table from the analysis ribbon. Right-click in the Design Constraints table and select “Add Design Constraint.” The design constraints are the result values that are critical to the success of the design. These include things like Mass, Safety Factor, Von Mises Stress, Displacement, etc.

There’s list of design constraints to choose from. Highlight the constraint and select “OK” to add it to the study. For this study – Von Mises Stress (Maximum) and Mass will be used.

After you’ve selected the required design constraints, limits and criteria can be set in the table. This allows for the results to be filtered and sorted based on key values. For example – finding which configuration yields the lowest mass while still satisfying a safety factor of 2.

Parameter values can be configured in the lower table. Discreet values can be entered with commas in between. This method was applied for the thickness because the stock material will likely come in a standard size. A range of values can be entered with a dash in between. Adding a colon with an additional value specifies how many points in the range. (e.g. 2-4:5 would yield 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4)

It’s recommended to create all the configurations prior to running the analysis. This will confirm that none fail and will improve the run-time of the study. Right-click in the lower table and select Generate All Configurations. Depending on how many values you’ve entered, this could take 5-10 minutes. Take a coffee break.

After generating all the configurations, it’s time to run the study. Click on Simulate from the ribbon to begin. From the drop-down menu – choose to run either an Exhaustive Set or Smart Set of configurations. Exhaustive Set will run a study on every single configuration. The Smart Set will solve the base configuration and each parameter change to the base – then interpolates the other results.

Now for the fun part! Once the study is finished, open back up the Parametric Table. For Max Von Mises Stress, I’ve entered an Upper limit of 35 ksi (the yield strength of AL6061) and a Safety Factor of 1.5. For Mass I’ve entered “Minimize” which will produce the configuration that satisfies the other criteria and minimizes mass. If the constraint is satisfied with the configuration – a green circle or checkmark will appear next to the result value.

To satisfy a safety factor of 1.5 – the study recommends a 0.5” thick crank arm with a 6” long and 0.25” deep cutout. This will produce a design that weighs 0.91 lb.

Let’s say that the design team wants to be more conservative and achieve a safety factor of 3. Simply change the constraint limit and the results will be sorted to find the correct configuration! As shown below, to achieve a safety factor of 3, the study recommends a 0.625” thick crank arm with a 5.2” long and 0.25” deep cutout. This adds some weight, but not much.

Once a satisfactory configuration has been identified it can be promoted to the model. Right-click in the lower table and select “Promote configuration to model.”

Hydrostatic Pressure loads with Inventor Nastran 2020

The most recent release of Autodesk’s advanced finite element analysis software, Inventor Nastran 2020, included some useful new features and upgrades. This includes automatic mesh convergence tools, Vault integration, corrected shell elements, and a new Hydrostatic load type.

This new load type allows the user to apply a fluid pressure that varies with the depth of fluid in a specific direction. Previous versions of Nastran In-CAD (2019 and earlier) required the user to create a variable pressure load using a table of coordinates and scalar multipliers. This approach also required the user to calculate the pressure at the bottom of the surface using the formula:

P = ρ*g*d

where the ρ (rho) is the fluid density, g is acceleration due to gravity, and d is the fluid depth. See the image below for more detail. Just like the standard Pressure load – the pressure will always act normal to the element face. NOTE: In Nonlinear Static studies, the pressure will continue to act normal to the surface even as it deforms.

Hydrostatic pressure loads can only be applied to the faces of shells and solids. With larger models and assemblies, it’s usually best to utilize shell elements to reduce the overall element count and prevent unusual stress concentrations. For the tank shown below, the walls are 1/4“ stainless steel. Due to the large size of the tank (10 ft. tall) a surface model was created so that shell elements can be easily applied. After applying a fine mesh the total element count is still only 10,000.

The process of applying a Hydrostatic Load is simple:

1. Create a new Load and use the drop-down menu to specify the type as “Hydrostatic Load.” There are no Sub Type selections for this load type.

2. Use the Fluid Density field to enter the weight density of the fluid causing the pressure. The default value will be 0.036 lbf/in^3 – the density of water.

3. Click In the “Point on Fluid Surface” box to activate the selection. Choose a work point, vertex, or use XYZ coordinates to define the top of the fluid. Only elements below this point will receive a hydrostatic pressure.

This work point can be created in the 3D model using Inventor’s work features on the 3D modeling tab. In this example – a work point was created 6 inches below the top of the tank to represent the maximum fluid volume height.

4. Define the fluid depth direction, either by selecting an entity in the model (work point or vertex), or by using the XYZ fields to define a vector. Typically it’s easiest to use the XYZ vector fields. In this example – the fluid depth direction is in the Z- direction. So the vector is entered as X=0, Y=0, Z= -1.

5. Use the arrow next to Fluid Depth Direction to change the normal direction that the pressure will be acting on the surface. The green arrows should be facing outwards in this example because the fluid is inside the tank. The arrows should also increase in size from the top to the bottom.

6. Constrain the model as required and run the analysis. In this example, the maximum displacement was 0.01” and the maximum Von Mises stress was 4198 psi.

Performing Process Analysis in the Autodesk Product Design Collection Part 1: Overview

In this first of several posts we are going to dig into what the Product Design & Manufacturing Collection has to offer in regards to analyzing how our products are made through their process.  Analyzing a process is very important when it comes to your business and is aimed squarely at helping solve two problems that can help increase productivity and understand bottlenecks.

1. Optimizing current methods by adjusting variables in the process.
2. Looking ahead for future planning such as adding a new machine or line or even another operator

Process Analysis vs. AutoCAD Material Flow

Essentially, we have two tools at our disposal to assist us with these types of challenges.  One of these tools has been with the Factory Design Utilities since about 2011 and hasn't been available to normal Product Design Suite customers until recent years when they were included in the Product Design & Manufacturing Collection.  This tool is nestled away in AutoCAD Mechanical or AutoCAD Architecture after the Factory Design Utilities are loaded.

These tools are quite rudimentary are are designed for very linear product progressions for analysis.  For instance, if a product can split to two machines or join into one station, or if there is a complex assembly of parts, this will not be an effective method of analysis.  Even in this routing below, there are multiple factors that play into the process, but a lot is ignored or averaged in order to obtain valid results and tends to be harder to explain or show to interested parties outside of engineering.  The tools use primary objects of Stations, Products, and Routing to achieve the results.  Actual placement in the drawing has no merit on the transportation time's analysis by the way as that data is inputted by the user.

Now the second and much more robust way to analyze your processes was introduced just a few years ago as Process Analysis 360 which has since had the 360 dropped and is just called Process Analysis.  This cloud based software is also a standard entitlement for the Product Design Collection and even shows up directly in the AutoCAD Factory Tab as well as the Inventor Factory Tab.  Make sure you download it from your Autodesk account and have been given permission from your contract manager to use it since it is tied to your Autodesk ID.

This software was built from the ground up to do what the Material Flow tools could not.  This software will allow multiple inputs and outputs and even allow operators to move while there is downtime or finished processes on their machine.

The interface is pretty straight laced to figure out.  There is an Asset Browser used to place Assets from the Factory Design tools or your own custom library, a Settings Property Palette, a Simulation Timeline used to show real time or accelerated time flow, reporting tools for Line Efficiency and Cycle Time, and even old reliable...an Undo command.

We'll dig into these tools more in upcoming posts.  For now, make sure you have access to the software and start looking at some of the tutorials that are built into the launch window.

Next post on this topic we will discuss the 5 main types of elements and what they do for the analysis.  But before that, here's a little bonus.  You can bring in an AutoCAD background for your Process Analysis.  Do this to show rough estimations of where the process is being performed in a facility.  I recommend just wall outlines to keep it simple.  Ensure the View Settings are on and click Import New for a Background Underlay.

 

Vault Backup Notifications With IoT! It Can Be Done!

If you are a Vault administrator you probably aren't receiving any status notifications from Vault regarding scheduled backup routines. If you are, then the notifications probably come to you via email using a custom script or application. Outside of third party server backup tools, this has been typical for Vault backups. What I have been increasingly faced with is administrators that don't want more emails. From anywhere. A Vault backup email notification, while important, is probably sent once each day (every time a backup is run) and hopefully it's just a note on a successful backup. You begin to see the issue; these emails quickly get ignored and lost in a sea of daily email messages. So putting aside email messages what is a better way to be notified of this critical information? How about a text message or a push notification? 

In many ways email is passé when it comes to things like reports & notifications, and rightly so. Much of what once had to be sent by email is now sent via a short notification to your phone (or a notification center). They can be seen at a glance and dismissed just as quickly. Wouldn't it be nice if Vault could do that too? Well, the good news is that using Powershell & IoT (Internet of Things) it can! Better yet; it probably won't cost you anything.

To get Vault backup notifications via your phone or tablet you will need to use a scheduled Powershell backup script. This script will post some key information via something called a webhook to IFTTT or Zapier. This webhook triggers an action using one of these IoT services. The service will then forward the information to your phone via a push notification or a text message. Let's dive in.

Step 1: Create an Account

The first thing you'll want to do is register an account with either IFTTT (If This Then That) or Zapier. If you haven't heard of either of these services then head on over to their websites and take a look at what they offer. In short, they automate online activities by watching for events that trigger an action. There are thousands of examples of what these services can do but one example is this blog itself. I have an IFTTT applet that automatically posts blog entries I author here, to my LinkedIn profile. Pretty slick, but that doesn't even scratch the surface of what can be done.

Which service you use is up to you. Both have free account options that are enough for this application with Vault. The major difference between the two is that IFTTT is geared for internet enabled consumer devices and services like thermostats, lights, appliances, and social media. Zapier, on the other hand, is geared toward business tools and can connect to CRM software, SQL Server, AWS, and social media, etc. I'm going to use IFTTT in this post but I've also tested this with Zapier and both work just fine. A third option is Microsoft Flow but you'll need a paid license to use it in this case.

Step 2: Create a Webhook Trigger

Whichever service you use you need to create a webhook trigger. Once you setup a webhook you should receive a URL that is unique to your account (the unique URL means you don't need login credentials to pass information to the IoT service). This webhook URL can be placed in your backup script and will be able to send small bits of information that you'll want to see in the notification. The webhook will look similar to this when you create it:

Step 3: Create a Notification Action

Still on IFTTT/Zapier we need to create an action. For our purposes here I'll create an SMS notification to send a text message to my phone but there are hundreds of possible actions to choose from. If you are using IFTTT you could send a push notification to the app instead of a text message (Zapier has no phone app). More Intriguing options might be to blink a light for a backup failure or perhaps automatically add some data points like size and duration to a SQL table used for reporting. There are some interesting possibilities, to be sure.

Step 4: Add the Webhook Address to the Powershell Backup Script

Once the Applet (IFTTT) or Zap (Zapier) is finished we can add the webhook URL provided to the Powershell backup script and use the Invoke-RestMethod commandlet to fire the webhook and send the data for our trigger.

There are all kinds of data points we can extract using a Powershell backup script if you want to add some stats to your notification. I have added the backup size, available drive space, and backup duration as well as a subject to my notification. The subject indicates a backup success or failure. These variables are all set earlier in my script which is part of the reason it's over 200 lines. You certainly don't need a script that long to get IoT notifications working.

With IFTTT the data after value1 & value2 in the script gets included in the notification based on the ingredients we selected above when creating the applet. Looking at the image below you can see where the webhook URL is placed, where the variables are set and then the commandlet that runs to send the webhook to IFTTT.

That's it!

Depending on where you have placed the webhook in your backup script it will trigger the notification you've configured from the IoT service. If you don't want daily notifications you could put the webhook inside a conditional statement that only sends the webhook if a backup fails. Here is the SMS notification message I received after running my Vault Backup task.

GD&T: Material Modifiers, what are they? How do they work?

If you have been around part drawings and manufacturing long enough, there's a pretty good chance you've seen a feature control fame with a circled letter after the tolerance. The examples/images shown below were created in Autodesk Inventor.

Probably the most common circled letter seen is "M". This means that the tolerance is to be applied at the Maximum Material Condition.

 

Let's take a deeper look into the different types of material conditions that can be applied to tolerances.

As the image above shows there are four different material conditions that can be applied and each one behaves differently than the others.

1. Regardless of Feature Size (RFS): This is the implied condition. All tolerances apply at RFS by default, which means no symbol is needed.
2. Maximum Material Condition Modifier (MMC): The circled M. This provides a feature with additional geometric tolerances as the feature's size departs from its maximum material conition.
3. Zero at MMC: Behaves just like the MMC. The differences will be discussed later on.
4. Least Material Condition Modifier (LMC): The circled L. This provides a feature with additional geometric tolerances as the feature's size departs from its least material conition.

There were a couple of important terms introduced in that list: Maximum Material Condition and Least Material Condition.

• Maximum Material Condition: This is the condition where a feature has the maximum amount material possible. Examples being the smallest hole size, or the largest pin diameter.
• Least Material Condition: This is the exact opposite of MMC, a feature has the least amount of material possible. Examples being the largest hole size, or smallest pin diameter.

Now let's see how these different conditions impact the position of a simple hole on a machined part.

Here we have a Ø2.500 +.010/-.000 hole and its position tolerance is Ø.010. Each of these conditions described above will have a different effect on the allowed position of this hole.

RFS: When a tolerance is implied at RFS, the specified tolerance is independent of the feature's actual size. This means that no matter what the actual hole diameter ends up being, the applied tolerance is always the stated value. In this case .010. Here's a table to show what that means:

MMC: The stated tolerance applies at the MMC size of the feature, and additional tolerance is gained as the feature departs from the MMC size. Zero @ MMC: This is very similar to MMC, except that the stated tolerance is zero. At the MMC feature size, the allowed positional tolerance is zero. As the feature departs from the MMC, additional tolerance is gained. Here's a table showing the effect:

Now that the effect of each modifier has been shown, how do you decide which one (if any) to use? 

• RFS: Used when locating a press fit pin or shaft.
• MMC: When the hole is being used in a clearance application.
• Zero @ MMC: Can be used in place of MMC.
• LMC: Used in a locational application.

Important note: LMC is not commonly used. RFS is usually the best option when using a feature to locate another.
