I work quite a bit with Revit Server clients and there seem to be a lot of confusion about setting it up. I am in the process of writing a white paper for the 2016 installer (which also works for 2014 & 2015)...but I thought I would address a few of the questions I hear the most.
- How do I create the RSN.ini file?
- The rsn.ini file is just a text document you will create with the host name, or names if you have multiple hosts, on separate lines. When you save it make sure you do a save as and set the save as type to All Files (*.*)
- Where does the RSN.ini file have to go?
- This file will have to go on the host, accelerator and users machines in the C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit Server 2016\Config folder
- Do I have to install different versions of Revit Server?
- Revit Server, like Revit is version specific, so if you want to host 2015 files on Revit Server, then you will need to have a Revit Server 2015 host set up along with accelerators if you need them.
- Also make sure that when you install multiple versions that they are all in their own folders...so Revit Server 2014, Revit Server 2015 etc and then the applicable sub folders under those.
- Where can I find updates for Revit Server?
- Currently the only version of Revit Server that has an update or hotfix is Revit Server 2014 and those can be found on the Autodesk website under Support, Revit Products, Downloads.
- How do I get to the Revit Server Admin page to create projects?
- Open an internet browser and type in http://YOURSERVERNAME/RevitServerAdmin201# and enter.
Note
It is important that all users be on the save version/build of the software...this is especially important to Revit 2015 because of the R2 version.
