When a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed on a design model in Inventor Pro, the FEA setup is stored in the component file and the results of the FEA are stored in separate files with one of several file extensions such as .fins, .fsat, .ftes. fwiz, .fmsh, or .fres.
When the design model or its parent assembly are checked into Vault, these FEA result files are also checked into Vault.
This can become a problem when Enforce Unique File Names is enabled in Vault and the assembly is checked out, edited, then checked back in. The FEA result files will be rejected because there are already files with the same names that were added into Vault with the initial check in.
The solution to avoid checking in the FEA results files into Vault is to locate and uncheck the option shown below to Create OLE Link to Result Files. This option is located as shown on the Access Ribbon: Analysis tab / Settings panel / Stress Analysis Settings / Solver tab / Results section, in Inventor Pro 2017.
When this option is checked, the simulation creates an OLE link to the result files. When cleared, no OLE link is established. This setting applies to ALL simulations in the document.
Note: The disadvantage of not storing the FEA results files in Vault is that if you delete the results files out of your local workspace, you must re-run the simulation to once again see the results.
Bob,
This blog article covers the solution to a situation that plagued many others that I had never seen the solution for. Great solution and very valuable to Vault users. You really nailed this one!
