Revit MEP: Options for Creating an Enlarged Power Plan with Wiring

If you have ever been tasked with creating an enlarged plan of an electrical view you likely discovered some short comings in using Callouts and Electrical devices.

If you create a detail callout view, you don't get the symbols for things like outlets and switches...so the items which have a nested generic annotation in them, so you would need to do a floor plan callout.

That's the good news...the bad news is...if you need wiring to show up, neither one will bring that over.

Process Options

So your options for creating an enlarged electrical plan with wiring are as follows, in order of my personal preference although none are perfect.

1. Duplicate the electrical plan (with detailing if you already have wiring in place) and use this as your primary wiring plan, but keep in mind the parent view will never go on a sheet.
   • Adjust the scale to what you want it to be for your enlarged plans
   • Duplicate as dependent as many times as needed for the enlarged areas
   • Wiring will be added to all views
   • If you want to see these dependent views as callouts on an overall plan you can create a referenced callout on that view.
2. Duplicate the electrical plan with detailing
   • Adjust the crop boundary as needed
   • Switch back to the plan you want to see the callout on
   • Create a callout and Reference other view, select the duplicated view then draw the callout.
3. Create a floor plan callout
   • Copy and paste the wires from the electrical view with wiring and paste into the callout.

Pros and Cons

Pros

• Option 1:    You have one view to do all of your wiring in that will automatically transfer to the other dependent views.
• Option 2:    You don't have to copy and paste the wiring initially.
• Option 3:    You don't have to do a referenced callout.

Cons

• Option 1:    
  • You can't place the parent view on a sheet so if you are going to have an overall plan that goes on a sheet with wiring you will need to duplicate with detailing for that view from the parent view.  
  • This does not automatically update on other views so any information modified or added will need to be copied to the other view.  
  • If you want to see the dependent views on an overall plan you will have to do referenced callouts.
• Option 2:    
  • All wiring is view specific so any wiring done in one view does not transfer to other views.
  • You will have to do a referenced callout on the overall electrical plan.
• Option 3:    
  • All wiring is view specific so any wiring done in one view does not transfer to other views.
