AutoCAD Datalink command error: "The specified Excel spreadsheet is not valid or not supported"

Recently an AutoCAD 2018 user reported that with and without the AutoCAD 2018.1.1 update installed, the DATALINK command would stall when connecting to an existing Excel spreadsheet with this message:

AutoCAD Error

The specified Excel file is not valid or not supported.

We located an Autodesk discussion thread that advised to "delete/disable all COM add-ins in Excel app and try again", here.

Foxit PDF

But the ultimate solution for this instance was to uninstall Foxit PDF. Then the error no longer occurred. Apparently, Foxit PDF and perhaps PDF Architect COM Add-ins can cause this error message when they are enabled in the Excel application, according to the note in the discussion thread at the link above.
